Why participate?

For Schools

  1. Contribute to groundbreaking research Your school can actively participate in cutting-edge research on psychological acculturation and educational equality. By joining this study, your school helps generate new insights into how cultural diversity influences students’ well-being, motivation, and academic performance.
  2. Detailed school report & results Participating schools receive a customized school report containing psychological and educational insights about their students, including:
    • Comparisons of well-being, school belonging, and performance on a standardized math test among students from different ethnic and social backgrounds, and how these evolve over time.
    • The development of students’ motivation and cognitive skills.
    • Growth of acculturation attitudes and (multiple) cultural identities.
    • Students’ perceptions of their school’s diversity climate.
    • How students experience teacher support and peer relationships.
    • How these factors interact and influence each other.
    • Whether your school aligns with or differs from other schools with a similar student composition.
  3. Minimal disruption, maximum impact All research activities are conducted by trained researchers during two consecutive class periods using tablets or school computers, ensuring minimal disruption to regular school activities.
  4. Support for teachers & staff We offer optional workshops and lectures for teachers, staff and students on:
    Inclusive education and classroom diversity
    Multilingualism as a resource
    Intergroup relations, prejudice, and discrimination
Effective teaching strategies for diverse classrooms
    Fostering a positive school climate
These sessions are delivered by expert researchers and tailored to your school’s specific needs.

For Students

  1. Greater awareness Students have the opportunity to reflect on their own psychological functioning, their school environment, and their interactions with peers from different cultural backgrounds.
  2. Boosting well-being & sense of belonging In the long run, the project aims to improve students’ emotional and psychological well-being, enhance their school experience, and strengthen their academic performance.
  3. Rewards for participation Each student who participates in the study receives a reward. The school determines whether this comes in the form of cash, movie tickets, contributions to a school trip, or another incentive.
  4. Making their voices heard Policy makers often rely on their own (often privileged or outdated) experiences or ideologies when developing and implementing measures that affect youth in our diverse societies. By participating in this research, students increase the scientific evidence for what really helps young people. Together, we can encourage policymakers to make more evidence-based decisions that truly benefit everyone.
  5. Supporting the next generation Through their participation, students contribute to a deeper understanding of youth development, both for those with and without a migration background. This knowledge helps teachers and policymakers embrace diversity and remove barriers to equality in education for future generations.

For Parents

  1. Involvement in improving education – By allowing your child to participate in this research, you contribute to enhancing educational practices and policies, ensuring that future generations receive better support in their academic journey and overall well-being.
  2. Equal educational opportunities – Our research helps uncover hidden barriers in education and reduce inequalities, ensuring that all students have fair opportunities. Regardless of background or home situation, this can give your child a better chance to reach their full potential.
  3. Better well-being and stronger academic performance – We provide your child’s school with valuable insights and tools to strengthen students’ well-being and sense of belonging. This can contribute to a more positive school experience and improved academic results.
  4. More recognition and appreciation of your culture at school – We aim to create a school environment where your home culture—whatever it may be—is better understood and valued. This ensures that the norms, traditions, and perspectives that matter at home are also acknowledged and respected at school.
  5. Preparation for a multicultural society – Through our study, your child reflects on their own psychological development, school experience, and interactions with peers from diverse backgrounds. This helps them become better prepared for the society and job market of the future.

For Teachers

  1. Better understanding of classroom diversity – This research helps you gain deeper insights into how students from different backgrounds think, learn, and feel. With this knowledge, you can refine your approach and create an environment where every student feels recognized.
  2. Practical strategies for your teaching practice – Together with your school, you will receive scientifically backed tools to better address diverse learning and motivation styles. This allows you to reduce mismatches and foster an inclusive, effective learning environment.
  3. Professional development – In consultation with your school’s administration, you will have the opportunity to attend a free lecture or workshop. The PsychAcc project offers tailored sessions for teachers on: Inclusive education
Managing cultural diversity in the classroom
    Multilingualism as an asset
    Intergroup relations
    Reducing prejudice and discrimination
  4. Stronger connections and mutual understanding in the classroom – By gaining a better understanding of your students’ cultural and psychological backgrounds, you can create a more connected classroom community where everyone feels heard and valued.
  5. Greater harmony between home and school culture – By understanding students’ backgrounds and home environments, you can bridge the gap between home and school values and expectations. This fosters stronger collaboration and ensures a more cohesive educational experience, contributing to more effective learning.
  6. Contributing to innovative and future-oriented education – Your participation in this project not only benefits your own classroom but also helps develop new insights and teaching methods that improve the quality of education as a whole.
